Genetic parameters and selection strategies for soybean genotypes resistant to the stink bug-complex Genet. Mol. Biol.
Godoi,Cláudio Roberto Cardoso de; Pinheiro,José Baldin.
Soybean genotypes resistant to stink bugs are derived from complex breeding processes obtained through indirect selection. The aim of the present work was to estimate genetic parameters for guiding selection strategies towards resistant genotypes, based on those traits associated with responses to pod-attacking stink bugs, such as the grain filling period (GFP), leaf retention (LR), percentage index of pod damage (PIPD) and percentage of spotted seeds (PSS). We assessed the parental lines IAC-100 (resistant) and FT-Estrela (susceptible), the progenies F2 and F4, 30 progenies F2:3, 30 progenies BC1F2:3 and 30 progenies BC2F2:3, besides the cultivars BRS Celeste and MGBR-46 (Conquista). Three field experiments, using randomized complete block design with...

The influence of animals from embryo transfer on the genetic evaluation of growth in Simmental beef cattle by using multi-trait models Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mota,Rodrigo Reis; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Marques,Luiz Fernando Aarão; Silva,Luciano Pinheiro da; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Torres,Robledo de Almeida.
The weight records from Simmental beef cattle were used in a genetic evaluation of growth with or without the inclusion of animals obtained by embryo transfer. A multi-trait model in which embryo transfer individuals were excluded (MTM1) contained 29,510 records from 10,659 animals, while another model without exclusion of these animals (MTM2) contained 62,895 weight records from 23,160 animals. The weight records were adjusted for ages of 100, 205, 365, 450, 550 and 730 days. The (co)variance components and genetic parameters were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method. The (co)variance components were similar in both models, except for maternal permanent environment variance. Direct heritabilities (h²d) in MTM1 were 0.04, 0.11, 0.20, 0.27,...

Phenotypic recurrent selection in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) with carioca-type grains for resistance to the fungi Phaeoisariopsis griseola Genet. Mol. Biol.
Amaro,Geovani Bernardo; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Silva,Flávia Barbosa.
The efficiency of recurrent selection was assessed in obtaining common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) plant lines resistant to the phytopathogenic fungi Phaeoisariopsis griseola. The base bean population was obtained from the partial diallel between seven lines with carioca-type grains and 10 sources of resistance to P. griseola. The plants most resistant to the pathogen were selected in the F2 (S0) generation of the populations (C-0). The best S0:1 plants that presented carioca-type grains were intercrossed to obtain cycle I (C-I). The same procedure was adopted to obtain cycles C-II to C-V. In each recurrent selection cycle, S0:1 progenies selected were also assessed in experiments carried out in Lavras, Brazil, always using as check the Carioca MG...

Quantitative inheritance of some wheat plant traits Genet. Mol. Biol.
Novoselovic,D.; Baric,Marijana; Drezner,G.; Gunjaca,J.; Lalic,A..
The objective of this study was to estimate gene effects and genetic variability for some quantitative traits of two winter wheat crosses (Soissons/Zitarka and Soissons/Sana) by generation mean analysis. In most cases a digenic epistatic model was sufficient to explain variation in generation means. The additive-dominance model was adequate for plant height and grain weight per spike of the longest culm. In two cases (grain yield per plant and single grain weight) these models failed to explain variation in generation means, implying the presence of higher order interactions or interactions between linked loci. Dominance effects and additive x additive epistasis were more important than additive effects and other epistatic components. Only complementary...

Effect of lactation length adjustment procedures on genetic parameter estimates for buffalo milk yield Genet. Mol. Biol.
Baldi,Fernando; Laureano,Monyka Marianna Massolini; Gordo,Daniel Gustavo Mansan; Bignardi,Annaiza Braga; Borquis,Rusbel Raul Aspilcueta; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de; Tonhati,Humberto.
The objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic parameters for milk yield unadjusted and adjusted for days in milk and, subsequently, to assess the influence of adjusting for days in milk on sire rank. Complete lactations from 90 or 150 days of lactation to 270 or 350 days in milk were considered in these analyses. Milk yield was adjusted for days in milk by multiplicative correction factors, or by including lactation length as a covariable in the model. Milk yields adjusted by different procedures were considered as different traits. Heritability estimates varied from 0.17 to 0.28. Genetic correlation estimates between milk yields unadjusted and adjusted for days in milk were greater than 0.82. Adjusting for days in milk affected the parameter...

Partitioning genetic effects due to embryo, cytoplasm and maternal parent for oil content in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wu,Jian-Guo; Shi,Chun-Hai; Zhang,Hai-Zhen.
Analysis of genetic main effects and genotype x environment (GE) interaction effects on the oil content of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) was conducted by using a genetic model for the quantitative traits of seeds in diploid plants. The experiments were carried out over two years with 8 parents and a diallel mating design, which produced F1 and F2 generations. We found that the oil content of rape was simultaneously controlled by embryo genetic effect, cytoplasmic effects and maternal genetic effect as well as GE interaction effects, with the cytoplasmic and maternal effects playing the main role. The results indicate that selection of maternal plants for high oil content would be more efficient than selection based on single seeds. Since the GE...

Genetic parameters for faecal egg count, packed-cell volume and body-weight in Santa Inês lambs Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lôbo,Raimundo N.B.; Vieira,Luiz S.; Oliveira,Amaury A. de; Muniz,Evandro N.; Silva,José M. da.
Worm infection is one of the main factors responsible for economic losses in sheep breeding in Brazil. Random regression analysis was used to estimate genetic parameters for the factors faecal egg-count (FEC), packed-cell volume (PCV) and body weight (BW) in Santa Inês lambs. Data from 119 female, offspring of nine rams, were collected between December, 2005 and December, 2006, from the experimental flock of Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation located in Frei Paulo, SE, Brazil. After weaning, females were drenched until the faecal egg count had dropped to zero. Two natural challenges were undertaken. FEC heritability was extremely variable, this increasing from 0.04 to 0.27 in the first challenge and from 0.01 to...

Genetic variation in growth traits and yield of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) growing in the Brazilian state of São Paulo Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Moraes,Mário Luiz Teixeira de; Bortoletto,Nelson; Costa,Reginaldo Brito da; Gonçalves,Elaine Cristine Pifer.
Analysis of variance and covariance was preformed on growth traits (stem girth, bark thickness, total height gain and rubber yield) of 22 open-pollinated progenies of the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis from an Asian Hevea collection introduced to Agronomic Institute (Instituto Agronômico, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil; IAC) in 1952. This progeny trial was replicated at three sites in São Paulo state and it was found that at three years from sowing there was statistically significant variation for girth, bark thickness, height and rubber yield. An individual test sites, values of individual plant heritability for girth ranged from h= 0.36 to h= 0.89 whereas values for heritability for progeny means ranged from h= 0.77 to h= 0.87. These moderate and high...

The quantitative genetic basis of female and male body size and their implications on the evolution of body size dimorphism in the house cricket Acheta domesticus (Gryllidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Castillo,Raúl Cueva del.
Few theoretical and experimental studies have analyzed the genetic basis of body size dimorphism. Since the evolutionary response to selection depends of the genetic variance in a population it is to be expected that traits under selection would have smaller genetic variance than traits not affected by selection. The evolution of sexual size dimorphism is affected by the genetic correlation between females and males, with the most dimorphic traits showing smaller genetic correlations between the sexes. As result of the differences in the intensity of sexual selection between the sexes, it is expected that the levels of genetic variance would be larger in females than males. I analyzed the genetic additive variance underlying six traits of Acheta...
